If everyone were as bad as cynicism would suggest then society would be intolerable and time with our neighbours would be time spent with piranha.

Fundamentally all people are born good. The instinct of preservation, the feminine side, is drawn to the good option. Survival is underpinned not  by self interest but by altruism. Where individuals are concerned with the welfare of the whole the society militates in the interests of its individual participants. Thus the high value placed on the preservation of a life in stark contrast to a past where lives were taken at whim. When life is cheap society is invariably in decline and headed for extinction. In a society where people are viewed as valuable resources rather than breeding vermin the quality of life will continue to improve. There are no exceptions. It is incorrect to assume anything about the behaviour of people under pressure.

Under pressure the innate good will shine through.

There are only a few things we truly own, no matter who we are. That thing which cannot be taken is imagination. Out of imagination comes hope. An eye on the past, a view to the future and a quiet resolve to get through the present. When misfortune comes it also goes. Does it make sense, do you believe in it and does it serve the purpose of improving things? Asking these things engenders the innate good in one.
